The Ashtanga Half Primary Series follows a set, progressive sequence designed to warm the body, build strength, and cultivate focus. We begin with Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar A & B) to awaken breath and movement. This flows into Standing Poses, which build stability and balance. We then move to the Seated Series, focusing on forward folds and hip openers to deepen flexibility and calm the mind. The practice concludes with Backbends, Inversions, and a grounding Finishing Sequence, ending in rest (Savasana) to integrate body, mind, and breath.
We’ll be exploring the Half Primary Series, the foundation of the Ashtanga method. This is a powerful and energizing practice designed to purify the mind, body, and soul through breath, movement, and tradition.
What makes this practice so special is that it’s not just physical—it’s deeply rooted in the philosophy of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. Through the steady practice of asana (postures), breath control (pranayama), and concentration (dharana), we begin to embody the essence of “Yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ” — the stilling of the fluctuations of the mind.
